Coaching and Advice Session At Gold Close

Saturday 14^th January

Andrew Randall and Tony Fletcher were again helping members understand the subtleties of making the arrows go where you want them to go. The afternoon was well attended and everyone took away some useful tips.

Saturday 17^th December

Around 25 archers turned up for an in depth session including visually displayed materials, overhead video shots describing good shot routine, alignment and bio-mechanical reasoning behind correct stance and posture .

A Q&A session continued throughout and was followed by archers working in pairs to watch each other try out the techniques described during the morning session.

There was plenty of feedback from Tony and Andrew which seemed to benefit both experienced archers and beginners alike.

Members thought it a really useful session that brought up many pointers for improvement and success.

NATIONAL SERIES 2011

I’m sure I speak for all the members in congratulating Andrew Randall on finishing second in the men’s recurve at the final of the National Series. It took place on Sunday 18^th September at Speke Hall in Liverpool.

The four finalists were Simon Terry, Alan Wills, Larry Godfrey (all Olympic athletes) and Andrew Randall. Simon shot against Alan beating him 7-3 to go forward into the final. Andrew shot against Larry who came through the preliminary rounds ranked as top seed; he comprehensively beat him 6-2 to join Simon in the final! The bronze medal match resulted in Larry Godfrey clinching the third place.

The final came round quicker than originally forecast, the weather conditions were fair with the wind picking up slightly. The first end saw Simon winning 2-0, the second he forged ahead making it 4-0. Andrew was extremely calm, supported by his coach Tony Fletcher who remained cool throughout. Andrew pulled the next two ends back making it all level at 4-4 going into the final end, Simon missing with one of his arrows possibly the pressure getting to him! Unfortunately Simon just got the edge and took the Gold Medal. Andrew was presented with his silver medal and a cheque for $1,000 dollars.

It was a fantastic achievement by Andrew which I’m sure he will build on in the future. Once again well done!!!

Richard Bingham’s daughter-in-law Ricki was also taking part in the ladies compound competition. She beat Andrea Gales to come third and take the Bronze.

Both the Bingham’s and the Randall’s turned out in force and went away at the end of the days shooting extremely proud !

Staffordshire Fita Star 24/25th September 2011

Five of our archers began the shoot at Lilleshall for this Fita but the weather played a part in reducing the number who finished both days.

We started with five archers shooting, two recurve, two compound and one longbow.

Andrew Randall and Sarah Smith both felt it best to stop early due to the strong winds.

It was the Henderson-Hirsts who came through to finish both days with Dean doing well and finishing with 1198 for the double, good shooting Dean.

Jane shot 1283 twice and Marsie put in 1214 and 1275. Again, battling against the weather took its toll and scores may have been less than hoped for.

So well done again.

Chatsworth 2011

As many members are already aware, this years Chatsworth Country Fair Have-a-Go and Double American weekend was a fantastic success.

The weather held reasonably well and many would-be enthusiastic archers came along to try their luck with a jellybow.

The shoot always needs as many archers and family helpers as possible. This years crew was no exception with a good number on hand each of the three days - Friday, Saturday and Sunday. But let's not forget the previous Thursday loading up, and many hours prior to that that are needed to ensure the smooth running of the whole event. There is a collective pat on the back for everyone who turned out to help but let's say congratulations to our Chair, Christine Oldroyd for her first success at the Country Fair.

I imagine there will be many more of the same to come too!

There's no room for complacency though, so if you can think of anything that might make the event run even MORE smoothly then there is an opportunity for you to say so on the Derwent Bowmen Forum. Granville invites members to point out praiseworthy things about the event but also asks if we can add further to the clubs success by initiating new ideas and sharing them with the rest of us.
